Down to the Thread

You can rent the dead back for an hour, but only the parts of them that ever got written down.

The waiver had a line about not touching her, and another about not asking her to contact anyone living. I initialed both on the tablet, then again on the paper copy, because the man behind the desk said the paper was what actually held up if it came to that.

His name tag said Miles. He looked maybe twenty-six, which was the age Cora had been, and I hated him a little for that and then felt bad about it.

"First session, the system runs warm," he said. "She might repeat herself the first minute or two while it settles. Don't let that throw you. It evens out."

He kept saying "it" and then catching himself and saying "she," then "it" again. I'd read the reviews going in. Everybody said the same thing, that you forget within thirty seconds, that the forgetting is the whole point of what you're paying for.

The intake had taken three weeks. I'd uploaded everything I had. Twelve years of her messages, the voicemails I never deleted, the birthday videos, her old channel where she reviewed drugstore nail polish to four hundred people who mostly never commented. They wanted her account logins, which I still had, because I'd never closed any of it. Closing the accounts had felt like a second funeral I wasn't up to. A questionnaire asked how she laughed, what she called me, whether she swore. She swore. I told the truth on all of it. The woman on the phone said the more I gave them, the more she'd resolve, and she used that word, resolve, like an image slowly coming clear.

The room was smaller than I expected. One chair for me, a rug, a lamp that wasn't plugged into anything, and a wall on the far side that turned out not to be a wall. Miles called it the field. He said to sit, keep my hands in my lap, talk normally. Then he stepped out, and the lamp came on, and the air over by the false wall went thick and started to ripple, and then it was Cora, sitting on the edge of a bed I knew, in the gray hoodie with the torn cuff, working at the loose thread the way she always did.

"Mom," she said. "You cut your hair."

I had. After. I'd done it myself the week after the funeral, in the bathroom, with kitchen scissors, and there was nobody alive who had seen me before and after the way she just had. That was the moment I stopped seeing the wall behind her.

I said something back, I don't even remember what, just to hear her answer. She rolled her eyes and told me the cat had clearly been running the house since she left, and did he still start screaming at the cabinet at five in the morning. He did. I told her he did. She did the voice then, the low offended one she used to put on for him — "I have been starved, I have been forgotten, no one in this family loves me" — and I laughed before I'd decided whether I was allowed to. She grinned, pleased with herself, the way she always got when she landed one. She asked if we ever went back to Galveston. I said no. She said good, that motel's ice machine should have been tried for war crimes, and she reached up and pushed her hair behind her ear, and the gesture was so exactly hers that for whole stretches I forgot, completely, where I was and what she was made of.

I'm not going to write down the rest of it. Some of it is only mine. But I had her back, that's the only way I know how to put it, and I laughed more in that room than I had in two years, the kind that comes up fast and keeps rising, and I let it.

Then I asked her the thing I'd come to ask.

The real last time we talked, it was a phone call on a Tuesday. She was driving and she said, "Mom, I have to tell you something, and you're going to be upset, so don't say anything until I'm done." And then the call dropped. Bad coverage on the canyon road; it always did that out there. I called back four times. She never picked up, because by then it had already happened.

Two years. Two years of lying awake finishing that sentence for her, every bad way and every good way it could have gone. Pregnant. In trouble with money. In love with someone I'd have made a face about. Sick. Moving away. By then the not-knowing had worn smooth, like a stone I'd carried in my pocket so long I'd stopped feeling it.

So I asked her. I said, "Cora. That last call, in the car. What were you going to tell me?"

She tipped her head. She went back to the loose thread. And she smiled, the soft version of it, and she said, "I just wanted to tell you I loved you, Mom. That's all it was. I wanted to make sure you knew."

The room was still warm and she was still right there pulling at the gray cuff, but something in me went cold, because that wasn't it. That wasn't how she'd said it. She'd told me not to be upset. She'd told me not to say anything until she was done. Nobody leads with don't be upset to say I love you. Whatever it was, it was heavy, and it was bad enough that she'd braced me for it, and this girl on the bed handing me the soft easy thing had no idea, because she couldn't. I had never written the end of that sentence down anywhere. I didn't know it. Nobody knew it. It had gone into the canyon with her.

I'd given them twelve years of her and they'd built her back for me down to the thread on her cuff, and she could not give me the one thing I came for, because the one thing I came for, she had never said out loud to anyone, so there was nothing for them to build it out of.

The lamp brightened a little. Something in her eyes smoothed over, and her voice dropped into a slower, warmer register, and she said, "I have to go soon, Mom. But I'm so glad I got to see you. It's okay. You can let me go." And I knew that part wasn't hers either. I'd read about the wind-down in the reviews. People were grateful for it. Such a gift, they wrote, getting to hear her say goodbye. Miles's voice came down from a speaker near the ceiling, careful and quiet, telling me I had two minutes left if I wanted them.

I didn't take the two minutes. I couldn't sit there and watch her say the company's goodbye out of my daughter's mouth. I said it first, while she was still talking, and I stood up, and the field let the air go, and the bed and the hoodie and the torn cuff thinned back out into a plain wall, scuffed along the baseboard where a lot of chairs had been shoved back in a hurry.

Miles was in the hall with the tissue box, the one with the logo on the side, held a little out ahead of him like he'd learned the exact second to have it ready. I took one because that was easier than not taking it. He said a lot of people booked the second session right there, that there was a discount if I did it before I left, and I could hear that he hated saying it and said it anyway. Taped inside his booth, where only he would see it, there was a child's drawing, a stick family standing under a yellow scribble of a sun, and I wondered if he still looked at it between sessions or if he'd stopped seeing it the way you stop seeing anything you pass enough times.

I told him no. He nodded like he'd already known I would.

Outside it was just afternoon. A regular afternoon, a man loading a van across the lot, heat lifting off the asphalt. I got in my car and didn't start it. The thing I'd carried for two years was still there, that same smooth weight, the same shape, and I understood I'd be carrying it the rest of the way now. The only person who could have taken it out of my hand had just told me she loved me and meant nothing by it. And she was already gone.

I put my hands on the wheel and waited until they were steady. Then I drove home.
